It all started with 1,000 worms and a worm factory

We brew worm tea here on our farm to provide natural fertilizer for our flowers. But our history with worm composting, or vermicomposting, began with the gift of a worm factory Christmas 2019. For three years, those worms comfortably lived in the finished basement of our suburban home while we learned what they did and didn’t like to eat. They moved with us to the farm and we’ve definitely been putting them to work.

Now, we have about 10,000 worms working hard to break down food scraps, and we turn their poop into organic fertilizer! Worm castings (i.e. worm poop) can be applied directly to the soil around plants, but worm tea makes a little go a long way.

So how do we make our tea?

Every month or so, there's a fresh batch of worm castings to be brewed into worm tea. We brew in a 55 gallon trash can. Worm castings go in a mesh bag and then we fill the trash can with non-chlorinated water (well water, in our case), add some molasses and an air pump to aerate the water which gets the microbes really amped up. In 24-48 hours, worm tea is ready.

We apply it fresh to our flower rows to organically rejuvenate the soil and maintain soil health. Healthy soil means more, beautiful flowers!

You can brew your own worm tea at home! Reach out if you want to learn more about how to get started!
